London Dock came together this Christmas as residents of its growing community enjoyed some festive fun on Wednesday 13th December with live music, mince pieces, mulled wine, and hot chocolate aplenty.
Setting the scene, filled with Christmas cheer and spirit, guests were joined by a three-piece jazz band, arranged by local Wapping musician, Ed Hicks. Consisting of a trumpet, a sousaphone and banjo the musical trio played a variety of Christmas classics, old and new.
Christmas carols are a nostalgic and core part of the festive season, probably one of the most ancient Christmas traditions, and undoubtedly intertwined with the celebrations of the festive season – its origins can be traced back as far as the 4th century. From their medieval origins, Christmas carols evolved and developed through the centuries, with Charles Dickens’ east London based “A Christmas Carol” playing a pivotal role in shaping the tradition we know today.
The question this raises is what is the nation’s favourite Christmas tune over 1000 years later? Amongst the top five are often ‘Silent Night’, ‘In the Bleak Mid-Winter’ and ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’, according to Classic FM’s 2022 poll. Let’s not forget the more modern, pop festive favourites too with ‘Fairytale of New York’, ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ and ‘Last Christmas’ also taking poll positions.
Nonetheless the residents’ in London Dock’s community enjoyed a special get together with their loved ones, including family and friends for a wholesome and joyful evening to ring in the Christmas season.
