The Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, has welcomed new affordable homes at Poplar Riverside, delivered by Berkeley in partnership with Poplar HARCA.
A significant new chapter for this part of the capital, Poplar Riverside is one of east London’s most exciting regeneration projects, providing more than 2,800 new homes over several phases.
These 219 new affordable homes for local residents form a key part of the first phase, which in total will deliver 643 homes across four buildings.
The Mayor joined representatives from Poplar HARCA, Berkeley and local councillors to tour the development and meet the new residents in May. They heard first-hand about their new experiences of moving into these brand-new properties.
New resident Arthur had been living locally for the last 15 years. He was delighted to be moving into his homey new place, saying: “The neighbours, all the people since I started moving in- everybody I've met, they've all had a smile on their face and they've all been comfortable here. I just look forward to settling in now and enjoying it.”
A substantial amount of the new development is dedicated to green space, the transformation will provide a 2.5-acre public park with an adventure and nature playground for children to explore alongside a 500m riverside walkway. Poplar Riverside will also bring approximately 90,000 sq ft of commercial space, including the recently opened Sainsbury’s food store- firmly establishing a new hub for the local community.
Poplar Riverside also offers 96 shared ownership properties, which gives the opportunity for more local people to get on the housing ladder and own one of these beautiful new homes.
Harry Lewis, Divisional Land & Development Director at Berkeley Capital, said: “Poplar Riverside will deliver a significant number of new, high-quality homes for the local community, as well as a beautiful riverside park, new shops, cafes, restaurants and workspaces. We're delighted to be working in partnership with Poplar HARCA, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, and the GLA to increase the supply of high-quality affordable homes for the area, as part of an inclusive mixed-use community.”
Paul Dooley, Regeneration and Development Director at Poplar HARCA said: “We are delighted that Tower Hamlets residents are able to move into high quality, affordable family homes as part of this development. We know the levels of overcrowding, and the growing need for affordable housing in this part of east London. This scheme will make a massive difference to local families. It is great to hear how positive the move to these properties has been for local people.
“We are really pleased to work with Berkeley Homes on this development, we hope this is just the beginning of a fruitful and long-lasting partnership.”
