London Borough of Haringey and Berkeley have celebrated the topping out of 46 new homes for social rent on one of Haringey’s largest brownfield residential regeneration sites.
Alexandra Gate will deliver more than 1,800 homes for Haringey, with almost 500 affordable homes including social-rented family homes. Nearly 400 affordable homes have already been completed on site, along with community amenities such as Hornsey Park, to ensure local people benefit first from the regeneration.
Haringey Council Leader Cllr Peray Ahmet, Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning Sarah Williams and members visited the site to celebrate the milestone occasion, which signifies the structural completion of the building - Bluebell House.
Once the Hornsey Gasworks, the 12-acre site stood empty for a decade after the gasholders were decommissioned. Together, Berkeley and London Borough of Haringey are now unlocking a wealth of opportunities on the site, in-line with the Government’s commitment to accelerate housing delivery and use a brownfield-first approach. The neighbourhood will also include a new nursery, children’s playspace, commercial space, a public square and specially commissioned public art that honours the history of the site.
More than 100 job opportunities are expected to be created at Alexandra Gate, along with 19 apprenticeships on site during construction.
Cllr Sarah Williams, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning, said: “We are very happy to celebrate this milestone, which marks significant progress in the delivery of 46 much-needed council homes. This important redevelopment of a brownfield site will provide hundreds of affordable homes, and it’s been great to see first-hand the new neighbourhood take shape.
“Working together with Berkeley we are ensuring Alexandra Gate will deliver high quality, desirable and genuinely affordable family-sized council homes which sit alongside beautifully landscaped communal areas and top of the range children’s play areas. Moving into these properties will be life-changing for local people on our waiting list.
“We are committed to providing the safe, secure and spacious council homes for our residents, and we are on track to deliver 3,000 by 2031, with more than 2,000 homes already started or completed.”
Justin Tibaldi, Managing Director at Berkeley Capital said “Our partnership with London Borough of Haringey is breathing new life into a forgotten site, bringing forward a wealth of opportunities for local people. Topping out these new homes for social rent is an exciting milestone, and we’re looking forward to hundreds of Haringey residents calling Alexandra Gate their home.”
