- Berkeley has acquired the former Middlesex University Campus within Trent Park
- Listed mansion house to be restored
Berkeley Group is pleased to announce it has successfully acquired the former Middlesex University Campus site within Trent Park.
Trent Park has been the subject of a number of planning proposals over recent years, however the site has remained unused and the buildings have fallen into disrepair. Berkeley intends to respect the site's historic importance to the local area, the community's desire to retain public access and revive the listed mansion house, as well as retaining and respecting the listed statues and grounds.
Trent Park Mansion House is a Grade II listed building and has been the iconic heart of the site since Sir Richard Jebb was gifted the land in 1777. However, much of what remains today, including some of the statues in the grounds, was designed by Sir Philip Sassoon, a parliamentary private secretary to Lloyd George and honorary Commander-in-Chief of 601 Squadron of the Royal Air Force, who regularly entertained Winston Churchill at the house.
Chairman of the Berkeley Group, Tony Pidgley CBE said:
"Berkeley has a great track record of developing sites of historic significance in a sensitive manner as has been the case with the Grade I listed Roehampton House and St Joseph's Gate in Mill Hill, amongst others."
"We are investing in the future of Trent Park and committed to delivering a proposal which brings the historic buildings back into use. I am confident that by working with the community we will be able to deliver a scheme which everyone in the area can be proud of."
Berkeley will now undertake a full consultation process to ensure that the development proposals meet the aspirations of both the Council and local residents.
MP for Enfield Southgate, David Burrowes said:
"I welcome the opportunity for full public engagement to determine and secure the future of Trent Park's wonderful heritage and environment."
Berkeley intends to begin preparing a masterplan for the 52 acre site in conjunction with the local community and Enfield Council imminently.
