Glorious Beauty Marks Landmark Milestone
- A landmark milestone in the implementation of the Warwick Road Masterplan, a £2bn regeneration project
- The Warwick Road masterplan - one of the largest regeneration schemes in Kensington, transforming this area of the Capital
- Alongside new homes, the masterplan will deliver a brand new school to 200 local children, landscaped gardens and a linear park
A landmark milestone in the delivery of the Warwick Road masterplan has been marked today (22nd September 2014) with the unveiling of a striking new public sculpture in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
Glorious Beauty, by renowned artist Simon Hitchens, was officially unveiled outside St Edward Homes' 375 Kensington High Street development by the Mayor of the Royal Borough, Councillor Maighread Condon-Simmonds.
The unveiling also coincides with the start of construction for a brand new school on the site, as well as the opening of a key part of a new public linear park.
The Mayor of the Royal Borough, Councillor Maighread Condon Simmonds, said: "The unveiling of Glorious Beauty is an important milestone for our community. This part of the Royal Borough is undergoing major regeneration, creating public spaces that can be appreciated by the entire community and providing an environment that is attractive to live, work and spend leisure time in."
With the first residents moving in last year, 375 Kensington High Street is a new and thriving community which has been established as part of St Edward's £2bn regeneration project at the site.
St Edward Executive Chairman, Paul Vallone said: "The unveiling of this unique piece of public art symbolises St Edward's commitment to the regeneration of Kensington, and we are very proud with the progress of the development to date, on which we have worked closely with the Royal Borough and local community from the start." The Warwick Road Masterplan is an exemplary illustration of how combining the right infrastructure, public landscaped space and thoughtfully designed architecture can create a vibrant and modern living experience for its residents and the wider community."
Having been established six years ago, the Warwick Road Masterplan, encompassing 375 Kensington High Street and Kensington Row, will see the creation of more than 1,000 homes across the two developments as well as a school for over 200 pupils.
The sculpture, made of a stainless steel 'boulder' sitting atop a glacial boulder that has been naturally worn over time, has been designed to symbolise how the old and new combine in the modern world.
Artist Simon Hitchens said: "Glorious Beauty has been designed to contrast the transient urban world in which it is positioned. The boulder is the metaphorical celebration of Nature and Earth, and atop sits a manmade celebration of nature's beauty mirroring the stone boulder.
"Glorious Beauty is a playful arrangement of natural forms in an urban environment. A man made celebration of nature's beauty that echoes a piece of the natural world and represents innovation, technology and a fast changing world."
To date, the Warwick Road Masterplan, of which 375 Kensington High Street forms an integral part, has delivered 153 homes with additional completions following later this year. Spanning almost eight acres, the site is estimated to become a community of more than 2,500 people and a new destination in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
