St George is delighted to announce that construction of Imperial Wharf Railway Station has now commenced.
The project is being undertaken by St George Central London Ltd, developers of Imperial Wharf, the award winning mixed use development on the River Thames. The station will be of enormous benefit to local residents and businesses in both Hammersmith & Fulham and the southern end of Kensington & Chelsea. Situated on the West London Line, the Imperial Wharf railway station links Imperial Wharf to Clapham Junction in the south, and Willesden Junction in the north and will become an important new rail service for London.
To mark the start of construction, a ground breaking event was held by St George on Friday 25th July 2008, with Cllr Stephen Greenhalgh, Leader of the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, and Cllr Merrick Cockell, Leader of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea.
Ross Faragher, Managing Director of St George Central London Ltd commented; "By working constructively with Network Rail, LOROL, TfL and the Boroughs of Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea, we now have the funding and design in place for Imperial Wharf station. Given these agreements we are happy to take on the responsibility for getting the station built. We are, therefore, very pleased to announce that work has now commenced. We are sure the residents and businesses at Imperial Wharf and in the local area will benefit from the new station."
Cllr Stephen Greenhalgh, Leader of the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham commented: "It has been a long road to get here but after 15 years there is finally light at the end of the tunnel for Imperial Wharf Overground Station. Thanks to the collaboration of Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea councils we are finally at the stage when our construction partners can get on and start building this important station.
Without Imperial Wharf Overground Station the full development potential of the south of the borough would never have been realised and opportunities for local people would have stalled. I'm delighted that building work has begun and I look forward to opening the station for passengers in 2010."
Cllr Merrick Cockell, Leader of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea commented: "This new station is an important part of our strategy for boosting the south-west of our borough. In combination with the new Chelsea Academy and the redevelopment of the Lots Road power station, it will deliver a powerful shot in the arm for local businesses. And it will better connect residents who are currently badly served by public transport with the rest of London and beyond."
The station construction includes piling, construction of ticket offices, lifts and pre-fabricated platforms providing a station fully accessible to all. Services are anticipated to start running in 2010.
