What is SHE BUILDS?

During a walk with his 7-year-old daughter, professional commercial photographer, Neil Perry, asked his little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She asked, “What jobs do girls do?”, to which Neil replied she could do any job in the world she wanted.

“But I can’t be a builder”, she said, “Only men are builders”.

This made Neil question what society has been teaching girls and women, to have it already programmed in at 7 years old to identify gender roles, stereotypes and inequality. And so Neil sought to take action.

At its core, SHE BUILDS UK is a portrait photography project with a primary aim of inspiring females of all ages to consider a career in the construction industry by celebrating a diverse group of women that already work in the industry, or as Neil calls them, the She Builds Rockstars, and bringing them into the spotlight with photography, written profiles and exhibitions.

By sharing their stories and profiles, it also illustrates the incredibly varied roles that exist within the industry; revealing that it’s not just about brute strength and working on a building site, that it’s actually an industry that women can (and do) work and excel in.

The Partnership With Berkeley St William

Improving the image of construction and ensuring we have a diverse pipeline of talent to come in to the industry is a key priority for the Berkeley Group. It is important to us to educate our local communities, visiting schools in the boroughs we work in to talk about the work that we do and career options available, as well as our award-winning apprenticeship programme.

We are contributing the venue of the SHE BUILDS exhibition at Poplar Riverside, in a commercial unit on Leven Road, to showcase the incredible portraits and the women profiled in the exhibition which includes our very own ‘rock star’, Arti Gurjar, Senior Technical Coordinator at Berkeley.

In partnership with Tower Hamlets Careers & Social Mobility team and the Berkeley Group Apprenticeship programme, the Poplar team will be inviting local students for a half day workshop at the exhibition. The workshop will provide an opportunity for the students to have insight into the different roles available within the industry and to speak to the teams on site about their day to day work, careers path and experiences to hopefully give them some insight, knowledge and inspiration.

Our construction site can provide an excellent learning experience for students. And we look forward to local students finding out more about the construction process.
