Berkeley Group has completed the handover of 62 new affordable homes to Poplar HARCA at Poplar Riverside – a major new waterside neighbourhood on the banks on the River Lea in Poplar – helping to meet the continued demand for affordable homes in London.
Poplar HARCA, a housing association in East London, will own and manage the new affordable homes built by Berkeley. The one, two, three and four-bedroom homes are now ready for residents to move in.
The two partners marked the affordable homes handover with a visit from local councillors. The 62 homes mark the first of 123 affordable properties which are being delivered to Poplar HARCA at Poplar Riverside.
A significant new chapter for this part of the capital, Poplar Riverside is one of east London’s most exciting regeneration projects, providing 2,800 new homes. The previously derelict brownfield site is being transformed into an attractive and desirable place to live.
With over half the development dedicated to green space, the transformation will provide a 2.5-acre public park with an adventure and nature playground for children to explore alongside a 500m riverside walkway. Poplar Riverside will also bring over 90,000 sq ft of commercial space, a new Sainsbury’s food store, a riverside pub and world-class public and residents’ facilities, firmly establishing a new hub for the local community.
Harry Lewis, Divisional Land & Development Director at Berkeley, comments: “Poplar Riverside will deliver a significant number of new, high-quality homes for the local community, as well as a beautiful riverside park, new shops, cafes, restaurants and workspaces. We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Poplar HARCA, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, and the GLA to increase the supply of high-quality affordable homes for the area, as part of an inclusive mixed-use community.”
Paul Dooley, Regeneration and Development Director at Poplar HARCA said: “We are delighted that Tower Hamlets residents are able to move into high quality, affordable family homes as part of this development. We know the levels of overcrowding, and the growing need for affordable housing in this part of east London. This scheme will make a massive difference to local families. It is great to hear how positive the move to these properties has been for local people.
“We are really pleased to work with Berkeley Homes on this development, we hope this is just the beginning of a fruitful and long-lasting partnership.”
