From Marbella to Kent: Couple Find Dream Home at Oakhill
After 24 years of living between England and Spain, Jeff Evans, 74, and his wife Sheena, 70, were ready for a change. The search for their perfect home in the UK was a long and winding journey, until they discovered the stunning Grade II listed apartments at Berkeley’s Oakhill development in Hildenborough, Kent. Whilst the couple had always loved their Mediterranean lifestyle, the post-Brexit visa process became overwhelming, prompting them to establish permanent roots back in the UK.
Jeff and Sheena most recently lived in a 3-bedroom house in Marbella, Spain, before deciding to make the leap back to UK soil. They purchased a 2-bedroom apartment in the Grade II listed Oakhill House situated in a prime position overlooking the private grounds of the estate. Jeff comments: “Our life in Spain was wonderful, but after Brexit, dealing with visas became such a hassle. We felt like we were always jumping through hoops to enjoy the lifestyle we had built. After years of going back and forth, we decided it was time to settle in the UK, close to our family. They live in Borough Green which is just a 20-minute drive away. Over the 24 years we spent in Spain, we have owned four bedroom and five-bedroom homes. Although we have now downsized, we don’t feel like we’ve compromised on quality or location.”
The couple’s property search was extensive covering towns across Surrey and Kent, but nothing compared to what they fell in love with at Oakhill. The beautifully restored, character-filled building, combined with a prime location just 15 minutes from their son and two grandsons, made it an easy decision. Sheena recalls: “As soon as we walked into the apartment, we knew it was the one. The high ceilings, the floor-to-ceiling windows, and the fireplaces are amazing; they’ve all been so beautifully finished. The apartment is full of character. It was by far the best property we saw and being so close to our family made it the ideal option.”
Transitioning from an overseas property to a UK home was a significant lifestyle change, but the move has been nothing short of perfect. The couple fell in love with the apartment’s incredible character and warmth. The south-facing terrace overlooking a conservation area further sealed the deal, providing them with picturesque views and a tranquil retreat. Jeff comments: “The outdoor space is just incredible. Sitting on our terrace, looking out over the conservation area feels like we’re in our own little oasis. We take a walk around the ponds and the country park next door every day - it’s such a peaceful way to start and end the day.”
For those looking to downsize in luxury, Oakhill offers an exceptional blend of historical charm and modern convenience. Sheena and Jeff have access to exclusive on-site amenities for all Oakhill residents including a gym, cinema, padel court and a co-working space – perfect for business owner Jeff. With two dedicated parking spaces and visitor parking available, every aspect of convenience has been carefully considered. Sheena says: “We love staying active, so having a gym and padel court just 30 seconds away from our front door is perfect for us. We love using the cinema room too. Everything about Oakhill has been designed to make life easier and more enjoyable for all living here.”
The surrounding area has exceeded their expectations. The couple benefit from a bus stop right outside the building, offering quick services to both Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks. As well as these fabulous towns close by, the vibrant Tonbridge boasts a mix of independent shops, local cafes, and scenic parks. Another short bus ride away, Tunbridge Wells offers a larger selection of high street stores and a bustling atmosphere, making it the perfect blend of charm and convenience. Surrounding Kent is rich in history, home to numerous historical sites, including impressive castles that tell the story of centuries past. Among the many landmarks, one of the couple’s favourite restaurants in Tonbridge was once a castle. Verdigris offers wonderful riverside dining, overlooking Tonbridge Castle. The charming setting and delicious cuisine make it a perfect spot for a leisurely meal. The couple also love Ivy House in Tonbridge, and the Chaser in Shipbourne, just a 10-minute drive away, where the picturesque countryside provides the perfect backdrop for a relaxed dining experience. Whether it's the historic charm of Tonbridge Castle or the tranquil riverside views, these spots combine to create the perfect getaway, right on their doorstep.
For the couple’s grandsons, aged six and nine, the area offers plenty of family friendly activities and green spaces. Jeff comments: “Our grandsons are football mad, and we love spending time with them. There are so many places to take them around here, whether it’s the parks, castles, or just grabbing a bite to eat in one of the local pubs. It’s wonderful to be living so close to them and able to help with childcare in a wonderful area that makes it easy to keep them busy.”
For Jeff, who runs a logistics business with his son, the excellent transport links have been invaluable. The M25 is easily accessible, and frequent train services provide a quick and seamless connection to London. Jeff says: “The connectivity here is fantastic. I work three days a week in Croydon, and the commute is so easy. And for us as a couple, being able to hop on a train and be in London in just 40 minutes is brilliant.”
Jeff and Sheena’s home buying experience with Berkeley was exceptional from start to finish. Sheena recalls: “The whole process was seamless. We never felt stressed or left in the dark. Cindy and Michelle from Berkeley were so friendly and helpful. They answered every question we had and even welcomed us to pop in whenever we wanted to see the apartment before we moved in. We honestly can’t fault a single thing about the process, everything was handled so smoothly. We’ve even been for coffee with the Berkeley team since moving in; they really went above and beyond.”
Now happily settled in their new home, Jeff and Sheena couldn’t be more pleased with their decision. Jeff concludes: “This move has changed our lives. We have the perfect home, we’re close to the people we love, and we have everything we need right here. We couldn’t have asked for more.”
