Shehmeer Khan Asad - Construction Graduate

After completing a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering, followed by an MSc in Structural Engineering, I decided to take a more hands on route to join Berkeley Group as a Graduate Site Manager.

Growing up, I have always wanted to work for Berkeley, and this is mainly because of the ongoing project in South East London known as The Royal Arsenal Riverside. I found it fascinating that just one development could change the face of my childhood area, by bringing in different people and improving Woolwich's appeal as a whole.

During my degree, I would envision how calculations or designs could be implemented in real life. Since joining Berkeley, not only has it allowed me to gain a greater understanding of what I learnt in university, but it has also taught me how to think outside the box in an industry where there are different challenges to face every single day.

One thing I have learnt very early on in my time at Berkeley is that in construction, you'll never know it all. Every project is different and there is always something new, which is what makes this industry so exciting.

Rubina Tihanyi - Technical Graduate

I have graduated with a BA (Hons) in Interior Architecture from the University of Westminster; and I am currently working as a Technical Graduate at Berkeley Homes East Thames at the Royal Arsenal Riverside Development in Woolwich, London.

I have been fascinated by the relationship between the built environment and people since a young age, and found it amazing how architecture can impact people's lives.
Therefore it was not a question that I would like to study architecture at university.

The Graduate Scheme at Berkeley Group provides insight into how the company operates and how the different departments are connected and rely on each other to deliver the final product. The rotation through different departments offers a great opportunity to get to know a lot of people within the Berkeley Group, which is immensely important and helps in your job day in, day out.

If you are passionate, would like to create places that prosper, and you are willing to work hard for it, then Berkeley is the place for you. The reward of seeing your work taking shape in front of your eyes and becoming an important place in people's life is just amazing.

Sam Bennett - Commercial department

I am currently employed in the commercial department for Berkeley Homes (North East London), situated at the site Woodberry Down.

I attended Nottingham Trent University studying Quantity Surveying and Construction Commercial Management as part of a sandwich course. The course was overall very enjoyable and allowed me to develop upon my initial understanding I acquired through college.

The Graduate Scheme at Berkeley Groupis incredibly organised and well-structured. The first 2 weeks focus on an induction into the company, providing an insight in to all of the different operating companies and divisions the Group has to offer.  Each day is spent with your fellow starting graduates and allows you to develop relationships you can continue to advance throughout your Berkeley experience. The scheme offers other fantastic opportunities for those starting out in their career, such as a Q&A session with the Chief Executive of Berkeley Group, Rob Perrins.

The day to day activities of a commercial graduate are one filled with learning, on the job development and responsibility, with each day consisting of different problems to overcome. As your time progresses, so does the level of involvement you have with the different trades and various commercial components, allowing you to become a well-rounded surveyor.

Kerry Crowhurst

I'm currently employed as a Land and Development Graduate for Berkeley St Edward

I graduated with an MSc in International Real Estate and Planning from The Bartlett at University College London in September 2018.. Living in the centre of the city, I became aware of large regeneration schemes taking place, and saw the positive results of well-designed schemes first hand. In turn, I began to recognise that some development strategies and designs didn't work quite as well as others. The notion of improving the city-scape increasingly became something that I wanted to get involved with.

The graduate scheme at Berkeley Group has something for everyone, given the variation across the four core departments of Land, Technical, Commercial, and Build. The opportunity to rotate across all four of these departments, as well as other departments like finance and marketing, has been invaluable for my understanding of the development process.

On a day-to-day basis, my work can be broken down into two main categories: work on sites we are looking to acquire, and work on sites we already own. On sites we are hoping to acquire, I assist with financial appraisals and feasibility assessments. Regarding those we already own, I assist with planning applications and the monitoring of planning conditions and obligations, amongst other things. The work on the Land team is very varied, and involves engaging with lots of different people and stakeholders.
