The Leader of Southwark Council has celebrated an initiative by a local theatre company which helps young people into employment or training.
At a gala evening to celebrate graduates of the Young Theatre Makers' course, Councillor Peter John praised the partnership between London Bubble Theatre Company- the Southwark charity that runs the programme - and developer St George.
Speaking at the gala event on 16 December 2015, Councillor Peter John said:
"It is fantastic to see young Southwark residents engaged and inspired by community theatre. The Young Theatre Makers' course is helping young people from the borough gain vital employment skills including teamwork, leadership, and self-confidence."
"I am delighted that the London Bubble Theatre Company, supported by St George, will help local youngsters achieve a more successful future."
Through engagement with theatre-based activities, ten young people have been trained by London Bubble Theatre to deliver workshops, and devised and toured a show for local schools and youth groups in Southwark, including St Saviour's and St Olave's school, Harris Academy Bermondsey and Cavendish School.
They have also taken part in a bespoke employability programme formed of CV workshops, interview training and a paid work experience placement.
St George, which is developing the iconic 170m-high One Blackfriars tower in Southwark, has agreed a three-year partnership to help fund the initiative as part of its commitment to supporting the local community.
Michael Bryn-Jones, Managing Director of St George said:
"St George is passionate about supporting young people in their careers and we are delighted to be helping the Young Theatre Makers' through this three year partnership. It is a fantastic employability programme, which is transforming young lives."
