Male grooming certainly isn't the sidelined industry it once was. With a raft of new beauty and grooming products available, men have never had it so good. Alongside these physical products are increasing numbers of boutique services too, from the classic wet shave, to modern beard styling, there's a lot to choose from. The centre of this grooming world is of course London, so we've hand picked some of the very best establishments in the capital.
The Barber at Alfred Dunhill is, on the face of it, a traditional barber much like any other high end London establishment. Situated in a truly beautiful Georgian mansion a restrained, leather-clad set of just three chairs can be found here amongst lashings of oak and decorative books. The floor is of course tiled. But unlike your traditional barber, this one doesn't just offer the wet shave and basic haircut. From beard consultations, to skincare and even manicures, this truly is a 21st century salon.
The NEVILLE barbershop places a strong focus on using quality, house designed products using natural ingredients for the distinguished London gentleman. You can relax in their beautifully appointed retreat and enjoy a full wet shave treatment, which includes a massage and leaves you looking your finest. But it's those traditionally branded shaving, hair, and skin products that make this a special establishment, many of which can be purchased from the barbershop itself. The barbershop is also located a short distance from Berkeley Group's London Dock by St George development.
Joe and Co.
Frequented by the likes of Martin Freeman and James Bay, Joe and Co. is the salon of choice for some of London's most stylish individuals. Now famous proprietor Joe Mills advocates 'proper men's grooming', which translates roughly to 'the full works'. In this thoroughly modern-looking establishment, you can treat yourself to the real nitty gritty of men's grooming, including ear and nose hair removal. There are also plenty of styling consultancies available, whether it's your beard or barnet that needs attention.
Based in Mayfair, but now globally recognisable, Gentlemen's Tonic offers the usual fusion of traditional and modern barber shop offerings, but with a seriously luxurious edge. Get comfortable in one of their opulent leather chairs, and you'll be treated to a one-to-one service in your own private booth, complete with flat screen television and complimentary drinks. Male grooming doesn't get much better than this.
Josh Wood Atelier
Mr. Wood himself is arguably the world's greatest colourist, and is well known for creating some of the most technically challenging styles for the catwalk. Visit the Josh Wood Atelier, and you won't see a barbershop shave on the treatment list, but you will be able to have some of London's most gifted stylists work their magic on your hair. There's a host of beauty treatments available too, and the Atelier even has its own kitchen. The barbershop is situated close by to St Edward's 375 Kensington High Street and Kensington Row developments.
It doesn't get much cooler than the Pankhurst Barbershop. The chairs come straight from luxury British automaker Bentley, and the decor is masculine London chic. Choose from all of the traditional barbershop appointments such as their deluxe wet shave, which benefits from Pankhurst's line of premium grooming products.
