Heritage Revival: Restoring Historic Buildings for the Future
We’re bringing iconic buildings back to use, giving them a new lease of life. Watch our video, filmed on location at Horlicks Quarter in Slough, to see how.
Restoring historic properties to their former glory enables us to conserve important elements of British heritage that would otherwise be forgotten. We work with partners and specialist craftspeople to preserve these iconic buildings, while also ensuring they are able to meet the demands of modern life.
Through our developments, we’re returning many landmark buildings to the community for the first time in decades. These include Victorian gasholder Oval Village in Oval, which we are restoring on site to house modern homes and public areas. The designs for the refurbishment of the Grade II Listed structure were put together with input from Historic England and local architects.
Across a 56-acre estate at Trent Park in Enfield, we are bringing buildings and gardens back into use, including the Grade II Listed Mansion House and Orangery and the Historic Walled Garden. Meanwhile, at 9 Millbank in Westminster, we’ve worked with heritage experts to repair the Grade II Listed Millbank Residences’ facade and restore many of its original interior features, including carved woodwork, stained-glass windows and ornate plasterwork.
At Horlicks Quarter in Slough, we’ve transformed the Horlicks Factory, built in 1908 for the production of the globally famous malted milk drink, into a warm and welcoming residential community in tranquil gardens.
“When we first walked around, this fantastic building was still home to the manufacture of Horlicks. This has been a landmark in Slough’s landscape for a number of years,” says Elkie Russell, Managing Director, Berkeley Homes (Oxford and Chiltern). “We knew that keeping this building was going to be hugely important to local people who had worked here or know someone that had worked here.”
The regeneration project includes the restoration of the site’s key landmarks, including the clocktower, chimney, prominent red ‘Horlicks’ signage and the war memorial.
“We’ve been able to not only preserve Slough’s industrial heritage, but also create a sustainable, thriving environment for residents. The emphasis on community-focused amenities such as the nursery, café and outdoor event spaces, alongside affordable housing, strong local partnerships, truly reflect the project’s positive impact on both residents and the wider Slough community,” says Dave Taylor, Horlick Quarter’s Design Director.
