History of North London
North London’s story stretches back thousands of years, with evidence of early settlement found on the high lands around Hampstead Heath dating to the Mesolithic period around 7000 BC. These elevated areas, once heavily forested and threaded with rivers such as the Fleet, Tyburn and Westbourne, provided fertile ground for early communities.
As the Roman city of Londinium grew, major Roman roads ran through what is now North London, including Watling Street, which forms part of Camden’s western boundary today. Roman routes likely passed through Hampstead and Highgate, connecting the capital to sites such as St Albans (Verulamium) and shaping the area’s early strategic importance.
By the medieval period, the area was defined by villages and manors such as Hampstead, St Pancras, Holborn and Tottenham Court, all recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1086 as small rural hamlets. These communities grew gradually as London expanded beyond the City walls along routes like High Holborn.
