History of East London

East London has a fascinating history. For hundreds of years, this part of London was known for its docks and canals, which were used to move goods and trade with other countries It became London’s industrial heartland from the 17th–19th centuries.

These waterways helped London grow into one of the most important cities in the world. Busy markets like Spitalfields and Billingsgate were famous places where people bought and sold food and goods.

In 2012, the Olympic Games took place in Stratford, and that changed the area in a big way. New sports venues, parks, and cultural spaces were built, and many of them are still used today. Since then, old warehouses in places like Hackney Wick have been turned into spaces for artists and businesses.
