St George, a proud member of the Berkeley Group, has unveiled an elegant two bedroom apartment in Westwood House, Chelsea Creek, dressed by renowned design studio Lucarna.
The collection of 112 new homes including Manhattan studio, one and two bedroom apartments and three bedroom duplexes offer the very best of canal side living, just moments from the King’s Road, Chelsea. Westwood House derives its name from Chelsea’s famous designer, Vivienne Westwood who opened her first London store on the nearby King s Road in the 7070’s soon after Mary Quant’s arrival in the swinging 6060’s, cementing the area s intrinsic connections to the fashion industry. Once referred to as the ‘borough of artists Chelsea has evolved into a uniquely stylish pocket of London.
Lucarna’s Interior Designer Araminta Louis has sourced inspiration from the artist James Turell, and the landscapes of California, with the concept designed to evoke the sense of light filled Californian days. Lucarna aimed to create a feeling of being transported to the sunshine state when entering the apartment, reminiscent of a luxurious getaway.
The unique furniture pieces throughout the apartment are a prominent interior design feature. Lucarna worked closely with Foresso on this project to create a standout dining table as a centrepiece for the reception room. Foresso is a small artisan UK-based company that leads the way in sustainable materials and manufacturing. The bespoke dining table is paired with a one-of-a-kind sky-blue faux leather bench. Interior Designer Araminta especially wanted to find ways to combine the old and the new. Vintage pieces, such as the quirky flower wall lights from the 1960’s add style and individuality while also focusing on sustainability, which is a core element of Lucarna’s ethos.
As you enter the apartment, you are greeted by a feature piece of furniture in the form of a black console table which is chunky, grounds the space and has a modernist aesthetic. Oversized artwork feels editorial and luxury travel guides add a pop of colour and a sense of exploration. The walls are painted in a beautiful blue hue, which replicates the Californian sky. The colour “Hazy” is part of Farrow & Ball’s collaboration with Californian based celebrity Interior Designer Kelly Wearstler.
Araminta Louis, Interior Designer at Lucarna, says; “Right from the start of this project we were struck by the sense of calm that Chelsea Creek evokes – you could almost forget that you’re in London as you stroll past the canals or sit amongst the trees in the beautiful, landscaped gardens. We have looked to create serenity in each space, balancing the familiar with the unexpected to create something that is not only eye-catching and unique, but ultimately warm and inviting. Soothing tones of Californian sunsets and warm Pacific seas, offset with vibrant artwork inspired by the current Luke Routledge exhibition in the neighbouring Saatchi gallery, set the soul of this beautiful apartment. It has been wonderful to turn our vision into reality and see our design come to life."
The living area feels sunny and warm with an oversized pink chandelier that is both vintage and modern at the same time, taking centre stage. The sun reflects and shines through the space resulting in a twinkling pink hue all around. The media unit has block colour divides – warm yellow to complement the voiles, which are a pink gradient down into yellow, to give the effect of sun coming through from the balcony.
A substantial, curved sofa from one of Lucarna’s favourite suppliers, Liang and Eimil, takes pride in its place in the living area and greenery has been positioned throughout the space. Brass is incorporated into the design through accessories and furniture accents. The pink theme is continued with bespoke soft pink boucle cushions and pink and green side tables, replicating the sky and the sunset/rise.
The principal bedroom plays with the sustainable aspect of combining old with new with a headboard upholstered in Kelly Wearstler fabric consisting of 100 per cent linen with a geometric design. The modernist element from the entrance hallway is continued with dark wood bedside tables which ground the space. At the end of the bed, there is a chunky bench upholstered in an off-white boucle fabric, with solid wooden legs paired with a gold silhouette side table. A bespoke wave design dressing table is made from a pink oak veneer. The overall effect is very tranquil, but also opulent and glamorous. Oversized editorial artwork makes the room feel like a magazine.
Stephen Kirwan, Regional Managing Director at St George West London, commented: “We are excited to have worked in partnership with Lucarna to create a one-off apartment, which not only captures natural light, but also creates the illusion of a warmer day inside the apartment – something we all sometimes need living in London! As you walk through the apartment you are immediately drawn in by the clever use of light and reflections, which is palpable right down to the smallest details. It has also been wonderful to see that sustainability is a core element of Lucarna’s ethos, which makes their design the perfect match for Chelsea Creek.”
