The Spirit of Camden Celebrated as Borough Turns 60
As the Borough celebrates its 60th anniversary, Camden Council has commenced its year-long cultural programme with a community-wide high street party and trial pedestrianisation of Camden High Street.
The borough of Camden, of which it has been known for the last 60 years, is a unique hub in London for food, music, fashion and innovation, and continues to attract creative people from all over the world, contributing to its unique character.
To celebrate its rich history, stories and grassroots culture, as well as the anniversary of the London Borough of Camden being formed, Camden Council has kickstarted its year-long programme of cultural events, dubbed Camden High Street Live.
Camden’s calendar of cultural events commenced at the start of May 2025 with The Big Street Party - curated in collaboration with the local community.
The party took place between Buck Street and Jamestown Road, and was a fantastic showcase of Camden’s unique and vibrant spirit. The day included a celebration of Camden’s Irish heritage, with performances from the London Irish Centre, various arts & crafts sessions, a DJ that showcased Camden’s musical history from the last six decades, as well as a folk-dance performance that fused traditional folk with contemporary street dance.
Pedestrianisation of Camden’s High Street
As part of Camden Council’s reimagining of Camden High Street and plans to create an even more vibrant and welcoming space that celebrates Camden’s unique culture and history, they are also temporarily pedestrianising a portion of the town’s high street from the Parkway and Kentish Town Road junction to the Hawley Crescent and Jamestown Road junction.
This is for the benefit of residents, visitors and the environment, creating a space for people to come together to celebrate the borough.
The trial closure of part of Camden High Street was put into effect from Saturday 3rd May and aims to create a "safer and healthier" place for residents and visitors while also ensuring the area is fit for community celebrations. In a recent consultation, more than 70% of residents were in favour of a traffic ban.
The Council will review the results of the trial before anything is made permanent.
Will Norman, London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, working with the Mayor of London, said:
“This trial is great news for Camden. Removing traffic will improve air quality and enable the high street to thrive as local residents and visitors enjoy a safer, cleaner and more attractive environment.
“This scheme forms part of Camden Council’s plans to establish a Low Emission Neighbourhood in Camden Town, backed by £500,000 of funding from the Mayor’s London Air Quality Fund. It’s a great example of an ambitious, locally led project that improves London’s air quality and supports the Mayor’s aim for a fairer, greener London for everyone.”
