Chinese New Year Celebrations in Wembley

Chinese New Year arrives at Grand Union with a celebration of local food favourites, from limited-edition Chinese-inspired crepes to comforting Vietnamese dishes and an exciting new Asian supermarket opening soon.

Crepes + Coffee: Jiangbing-Inspired Crepe for Chinese New Year

Leading the celebrations is Crepes + Coffee, the canalside café run from a picturesque narrowboat on the Grand Union Canal in Wembley, London. To mark the overlap of Pancake Day and Chinese New Year, the team is launching a limited-edition jiangbing-inspired crepe.

The special crepe features eggs, spring onions, coriander and hoisin sauce, with a choice of beef brisket or pork belly, bringing bold, savoury flavours to the classic pancake format. Alongside the Chinese New Year special, visitors can still enjoy Crepes + Coffee’s popular sweet and savoury favourites. Choices range from salted caramel to chocolate and banana and ham and cheese, all paired perfectly with their speciality coffee.

The café is run by Andrei Speriatu, a former Connaught Hotel butler and room service manager who swapped Mayfair for life on the canal in 2023. A local to Grand Union himself, Andrei’s narrowboat café has quickly become a favourite with residents and visitors alike. It offers a relaxed, friendly spot to enjoy great coffee and freshly made crepes by the water.

Whether you’re stopping by to mark Chinese New Year, Pancake Day, or simply in need of a winter warmer, Crepes + Coffee offers the perfect excuse to soak up the canalside atmosphere this Chinese New Year.

Ladudu Vietnamese Restaurant Opens at Grand Union

Also launching at Grand Union during Chinese New Year is new independent Vietnamese kitchen Ladudu, which will officially open to the public on 17 February. Founded by owner Teresa Le, Ladudu is rooted in a passion of home-cooked dishes and creative ways to enjoy Vietnamese cuisine beyond the shores of Vietnam.

The menu celebrates classic, comforting dishes: think fragrant bowls of pho, vibrant stir-fries and homemade desserts, ideal for those seeking nourishment during the winter months. The name Ladudu takes inspiration from the Vietnamese language, combining “lá đu đủ” (papaya leaf) and “đủ” (enough). This name reflects the philosophy that runs throughout the menu, which focuses on healthy, comforting dishes made using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Community plays a central role here too. Ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible, with halal meat from a nearby butcher Tariq Halal and vegetables from independent shops. The public are able to purchase Ladudu’s range of signature sauces and ingredients to enjoy at home.

In addition to its welcoming dining space, Ladudu plans to host community workshops and cooking classes for adults and children. The restaurant also features a private dining area.

Ladudu will be open 11am–5pm daily (except Tuesdays), inviting guests to discover its vibrant flavours and warm hospitality.
