The Elizabeth Line is Here
TFL's newest railway, the Elizabeth Line, was officially opened on 24 May 2022.
The first of many services have already started running, with plenty more to be added later this year and into 2023.
This is excellent news for commuters, visitors, and holiday-goers, with reduced journey times and greater accessibility across the region in time for summer.
The Current Phase
The Elizabeth Line currently operates as three separate railways: the western section between Reading, Heathrow and Paddington, the central section between Paddington and Abbey Wood, and the eastern section between Liverpool Street and Shenfield.
The next phase of the opening is expected to occur in Autumn and will integrate services from Reading, Heathrow and Shenfield to the central tunnels.
Nine of the ten new London stations from Paddington to Abbey Wood have opened, including Canary Wharf, Custom House, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel, Tottenham Court Road and Woolwich, with Bond Street opening later this year.
Easier Access to Heathrow Airport
The Elizabeth Line now easily connects frequent flyers and holidaymakers to Heathrow Airport.
Every hour, four trains travel to Terminals 2, 3 and 4, and two travel to Terminals 2, 3 and 5.
It will take travellers around 35 minutes to arrive at Heathrow from Paddington, which is welcome news for those wanting to get away on holiday this year.
The journey will be made even easier later this year when Heathrow, Reading and Shenfield services connect with central tunnels, meaning passengers can travel directly to their airport without needing to change at Paddington.
Journey Times
Journey times for those travelling in and around London have already been significantly reduced. For example, passengers can now get from Paddington to Canary Wharf in just 17 minutes.
For those living at Royal Arsenal Riverside in Woolwich, the on-site station means travellers and commuters can get to Liverpool Street in just 15 minutes and Canary Wharf in only 8 minutes.
The service currently provides 12 trains per hour between Paddington and Abbey Wood, but when the next phase occurs later this year, there will be up to 24 trains per hour during peak time and 20 trains per hour off-peak.
With a greater frequency of trains and faster journey times, commuters will find it much easier getting to and from the office, while day-trippers will find it much simpler to get around and explore our incredible capital and neighbouring counties.
Better Connections to Berkshire and Beyond
The nine stations from West Drayton to Reading now appear on the London Underground Map, meaning commuters from these areas will have a much quicker and more comfortable journey into the city.
The Elizabeth Line covers 41 stations, spreading from the centre of London to Reading and Heathrow in the West, Shenfield to the North East and Abbey Wood in the South East.
One of those 41 stations is Slough, which is ideal for commuting residents from Horlicks Quarter. For those living in Reading, residents of Bankside Gardens and Green Park Village are under 20 minutes away by bus from Reading Station, and those at Huntley Wharf are less than a mile away.
Those living in these neighbouring locations can now arrive at London Paddington in under 30 minutes, making the journey into the city more commutable and accessible than ever before.
As well as Reading, other stops in Berkshire will include Twyford, Maidenhead, and Langley, while stops have also been added at Burnham and Iver in Buckinghamshire.
Comfortable and Accessible Travel
Journey times have reduced, and comfort has increased. Passengers on the Elizabeth Line will be treated to brand new train carriages featuring Wi-Fi- connectivity, real-time travel information screens and air conditioning.
There is also more dedicated space for prams, bicycles and luggage to make getting around the city easier for everyone.
All 41 stations on the Elizabeth line are step-free from the street to the platform and offer the same ‘turn up and go’ service currently provided on the Tube and London Overground, providing free assistance on and off the train at any time, without needing to book in advance.
The new trains also feature a specific carriage with dedicated wheelchair spaces close to the doors for easy access and entirely separate from other multi-use areas.
For enhanced safety and security, all trains will be staffed from the very first to the last, for your total peace of mind.
