What Is the Elizabeth Line? Your Guide to Commuting Across London
For those living in and around London, the Elizabeth Line is a welcome addition to the capital’s transport network, simplifying journeys for many residents.
After taking 13 years to complete, this large construction project is now completely up and running—offering seamless connections between London and its surrounding areas.
Join us as we uncover what the Elizabeth Line is, how you can recognise it and why it’s a preferred method of transport for many commuters.
1. What Is the Elizabeth Line in London?
The Elizabeth Line is a railway that connects London to its suburbs, offering fast and high-capacity solutions into and out of the city.
The Elizabeth Line includes 41 stations and stretches over 100 kilometres, reaching commuters west and east of London. The railway itself runs above and below ground, depending on the areas you pass through.
Cementing itself as London’s first accessible railway, the Elizabeth Line also includes step-free access at every platform, providing a more seamless experience for those who require assistance boarding trains.
What Is the London Crossrail?
‘Crossrail’ is another name for the Elizabeth Line. Originally named ‘Crossrail’ in earlier construction, the railway’s name was changed in February 2016 by former Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.
Since then, ‘Crossrail’ has been referred to as the ‘Elizabeth Line’ in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.
2. What Colour Is the Elizabeth Line?
The Elizabeth Line can be quickly identified thanks to its distinctive purple colour. Tube maps, stations and trains all include this bold shade of purple to make the Elizabeth Line easy to recognise for commuters.
This particular purple was selected by Transport for London to remain in keeping with their core palette while making the Elizabeth Line easy to distinguish from other lines.
3. Where Does the Elizabeth Line Run?
The Elizabeth Line runs across west and east London, connecting parts of Greater London up to one of the quickest routes through the city.
Some Elizabeth Line routes, like Abbey Wood to Reading, journey through inner London to give commuters easy access to popular parts of the city. Stations such as Liverpool Street, Tottenham Court Road, Bond Street and Paddington can be reached via this line, without changing connections.
End destinations for Elizabeth Line trains include:
- Reading
- Abbey Wood
- Heathrow Terminal 4
- Heathrow Terminal 5
- Shenfield
- London Paddington
- London Liverpool Street

Developments, such as Green Park Village in Reading, are close to the Elizabeth Line’s western destination, providing commuters with a fast-track route into London. Meanwhile, those who reside in nearby towns, like Slough, can also benefit from better connectivity into London via the Elizabeth Line.
Within London, our community-focused Royal Arsenal Riverside development in Woolwich features its own Elizabeth Line station on-site. Alternatively, residents at The Green Quarter—just a short distance from the local Elizabeth Line station—can get to Bond Street in as little as 17 minutes.
Boasting connections to the wider underground network, the benefits of the Elizabeth Line can be easily felt across our developments in London and beyond—making travel easier and quicker for residents than ever before.
