Expert interior designers Artspace, the team behind the new show apartment at Reading Riverworks, share how they brought a contemporary and intelligent design approach to this sought-after collection of riverside apartments in Reading.
Artspace Interior Design: Inspired by the Riverside Setting
When we were approached to design the first showhome at Reading Riverworks in Berkshire, our goal was to create a home that captured the unique balance this development offers: sophisticated urban living alongside the calmness and beauty of a riverside setting.
From the outset, we wanted the apartment to feel elegant and aspirational, while remaining warm, relaxed and genuinely liveable. The surrounding location beside the River Thames became a huge source of inspiration for the overall design direction, influencing everything from the colour palette through to the artwork and styling details throughout the space.
Soft greens, muted blues and warm neutral tones were used to reflect the tranquillity of riverside living in Reading, while layered textures, natural materials and curved furniture help soften the clean architectural lines of the apartment. Materials such as marble, fluted wood and tactile fabrics introduce a subtle sense of luxury without making the space feel overly formal or trend driven.
Open-Plan Living in Reading Riverworks Apartments
The open-plan layout already provided a fantastic foundation for modern living in Reading, so we focused on carefully defining each area in a way that still felt seamless and connected.
Through thoughtful furniture placement, lighting and styling, we created distinct zones for dining, entertaining, relaxing and working, whilst maintaining an open and sociable atmosphere throughout the apartment. We wanted each space to feel purposeful, but still easy and natural to live in day to day.
Adding Personality Through Bespoke Details
A number of bespoke design elements were introduced to the Reading Riverworks show apartment to bring individuality and personality into the home.
In the living area, a custom-designed media unit combines practical storage with a sleek, tailored finish, helping the space feel refined yet functional. In the bedrooms, statement headboards with integrated backlighting were designed to create a boutique hotel feel, adding warmth and softness to the spaces.
Artwork also played an important role in telling the story of the apartment. Several pieces were inspired by the River Thames riverside surroundings, helping to strengthen the connection between the interior and its location.
Designed with a Connection to Reading
We also wanted the showhome to feel connected to Reading itself, so we incorporated products from local independent suppliers including Oak and Soap Co, Purl Coffee and Powerhouse Honey. These details help give the apartment a stronger sense of place and create a more personal, authentic feel throughout the styling.
Stylish, Practical Apartments in Reading
Practicality was just as important to us as aesthetics throughout the design process. We wanted to demonstrate how apartment living in Berkshire can feel both luxurious and highly functional, so integrated storage solutions were carefully considered throughout the home.
Fitted wardrobes, hallway storage and multifunctional furniture all help maximise the space while maintaining a clean and uncluttered look.
Creating an Aspirational Lifestyle
Ultimately, the showhome was designed to help potential purchasers emotionally connect with the lifestyle at Reading Riverworks. We wanted visitors to walk in and immediately imagine themselves living there - enjoying the energy and convenience of the town alongside the calmness of the river and a beautifully considered home environment.
The final result is a space that feels sophisticated yet comfortable, elevated yet effortless. A home that reflects modern riverside living in a way that feels timeless, welcoming and deeply connected to its surroundings.
