Horlicks Quarter Apartments: Inside the Maltings Show Apartment in Slough

In this article, Sally Watson, Director of Client Relations at Abode Interiors, shares the design ethos behind their latest Berkeley project - the new show apartment at Horlicks Quarter designed to showcase the exceptional lifestyle available in the latest phase, The Maltings.

The Maltings – Heritage Architecture, Respectfully Reimagined

The Maltings is a collection of 1, 2 & 3 bedroom apartments set within a building that pays respectful homage to the architectural legacy of the iconic Horlicks Factory. Its external façade honours the character, materials and proportions of the original factory building - arguably one of Slough’s most recognisable landmarks.

Interior Design Inspiration Behind The Horlicks Quarter Show Apartment

Sally comments: "Our vision at Abode was to create a space that feels instantly warm, inviting and liveable - while subtly reflecting both its surroundings and the lifestyle of its future residents.

The foundation of the scheme is a 'malt palette' - a collection of soft, warm, neutral tones inspired by the site’s history (Horlicks, a malt drink), but interpreted in a contemporary way. Think rich caramels, gentle taupes and comforting, earthy hues that create a sense of calm.

To elevate the tonal palette, accents of aubergine have been included to introduce depth and sophistication, while blush and apricot highlights bring lightness and energy. The result is a space that feels cohesive yet dynamic - elevated without losing its sense of comfort".

Modern Living at Horlicks Quarter: Wellness and Lifestyle Design

"Beyond aesthetics, the design is rooted in how people actually live. The apartment has been imagined for a modern resident - someone balancing city connectivity with a desire for wellbeing and access to nature.

This is expressed through subtle storytelling within the space. Wellness cues appear throughout - from Pilates accessories – in anticipation of the new Pilates studio coming to Horlicks Quarter - to sauna-inspired styling elements, hinting at a lifestyle that prioritises balance and self-care. Locally manufactured organic diffusers and natural materials engage the senses, while a record player introduces a slower, more mindful rhythm to daily life".

Flexible Living Spaces in The Maltings Apartments

"Practicality plays an equally important role. Every detail has been considered through the lens of usability and flexibility.

A standout feature is the bespoke media unit in the living area, which cleverly doubles as a work-from-home space. Seamlessly integrated storage, concealed work surfaces and adaptable furniture reflect the evolving needs of contemporary residents - where home must now accommodate work, relaxation and socialising in equal measure.

Elsewhere, thoughtful additions such as integrated hooks and smart storage solutions ensure the apartment feels as functional as it is beautiful".

Contemporary Apartment Design Trends at Horlicks Quarter

"While timeless in its foundation, the scheme is also distinctly current. The move away from cooler greys towards warmer neutrals reflects a broader shift in interior design, mirroring trends seen across fashion and lifestyle.

Aubergine emerges as a key accent colour of the moment, while the reintroduction of chrome finishes signals a return to polished, reflective materials. Used in lighting and detailing, chrome adds a subtle edge - appealing particularly to a younger, design-conscious audience.

Natural textures, from linen to light woods and rustic ceramics, bring softness and tactility, reinforcing the connection to nature and wellbeing."

Designing a Home with Character at The Maltings

"Ultimately, the apartment has been designed to feel like a home. Layered styling elements, such as artisanal vases and collected objects, suggest a resident with a story: someone who travels, curates, and surrounds themselves with meaningful pieces.

This approach creates depth and authenticity, allowing visitors to imagine their own lives unfolding within the space".
