Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (BMAG)

Barber Institute of Fine Arts
Smaller in size but no less renowned is the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, a gallery regularly listed among the UK's best. Located at the University of Birmingham it is known for collections spanning Renaissance to modern art.
Ikon Gallery
For contemporary art, there's no better choice than the Ikon Gallery. Located in Brindley Place in a restored Victorian school building this is Birmingham's best-known contemporary art venue. It hosts changing exhibitions from internationally acclaimed contemporary artists and offers free entry.
Eastside Projects
Eastside Projects is an artist-run contemporary art space in Digbeth, known for experimental exhibitions, public art projects and support for emerging artists.
It also produces the Birmingham Art Map, which showcases exhibitions and creative events across the city.
ArtsFest
Every September, Birmingham also hosts the largest free arts festival in the UK, ArtsFest, showcasing performances, exhibitions and creative activities across the city.
Street art
Birmingham also has a thriving street art scene, particularly around Digbeth. You'll find colourful murals, large-scale public artworks and pieces by local and international artists. The area's industrial architecture provides a distinctive backdrop that gives Birmingham's street art a character that's quite different from London.
Birmingham Theatres
If theatre is your thing, you have four major venues to choose from, including the Hippodrome, the Alexandra Theatre, the Old Rep, and the innovative Birmingham Repertory Theatre (the Rep).
Birmingham Hippodrome
The Birmingham Hippodrome is one of the busiest theatres in the UK, hosting major West End productions, musicals, ballet and opera. It's home to the internationally renowned Birmingham Royal Ballet, one of the UK's three major ballet companies, and the only one outside London.
The Alexandra Theatre
Often called "The Alex", this is one of Birmingham's most historic theatres. It regularly welcomes touring productions direct from the West End, including major musicals, dramas and comedy performances.
The Old Rep
Birmingham's rich theatre heritage includes the historic Old Rep, the UK's first purpose-built repertory theatre. Opened in 1913, it helped launch the careers of some of Britain's most celebrated actors and remains a popular venue for live performances today. The Old Rep continues to host plays, musicals, comedy, family shows and community performances, preserving its role as an active part of Birmingham's theatre scene.
Birmingham Repertory Theatre
Known as ‘The REP’, this is one of Britain's leading producing theatres and has a reputation for developing new work alongside classic productions. It has been a key part of Birmingham's cultural life for more than a century.
Independent and Fringe Theatre
Birmingham also has a thriving independent theatre scene, with smaller venues across the city staging experimental productions, contemporary drama, spoken word events and community performances. Areas such as Digbeth have become increasingly important for emerging theatre makers and creative collaborations.

Birmingham has a rich musical heritage spanning classical, jazz, rock and contemporary music. Symphony Hall is widely regarded as one of the finest concert venues in the world and is home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
The city has also played a significant role in shaping British popular music, producing influential artists across multiple genres. Birmingham is the birthplace of heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath, home to internationally successful bands including Duran Duran and UB40, and the city that gave rise to Jeff Lynne and Electric Light Orchestra (ELO).
