Berkeley Group was recognised for its pioneering approach to nature recovery at the National Sustainability Awards 2025, taking home the Biodiversity Protection accolade.
The cross-sector awards, from The Better Society Network, celebrate ‘the pioneers of sustainability’ across the UK.
The Biodiversity Protection Award recognises the company’s long-term commitment to restoring habitats and creating nature-rich places within its large-scale regeneration sites. Since 2017, Berkeley has voluntarily committed to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) on its developments, years ahead of new national requirements introduced in 2024.
Across 57 sites, Berkeley is delivering more than 1,200 acres of new or enhanced natural habitats, including living roofs, woodlands, grasslands and wetlands, much of it in urban communities where green space is most needed. Its approach combines specialist ecological expertise with partnerships such as its long-running collaboration with London Wildlife Trust and The Wildlife Trust, ensuring high-quality habitats that benefit both people and wildlife.
This year alone, Berkeley has opened new parks, allotments and community gardens, while hosting events from community planting days to school wildlife trails.
Recent highlights include:
- the opening of a new park at King’s Road Park, Fulham, part of a six-acre network of green space expected to deliver more than 110% Biodiversity Net Gain;
- the creation of a new living wall and interactive wildlife trail at the on-site tree nursery at The Green Quarter, Ealing, supporting local schools and residents’ wellbeing;
- and at Trillium, Westminster, we have installed a living hoarding.
Louise Clarke, Head of Sustainability at Berkeley Group, said:
“Berkeley has been delivering Biodiversity Net Gain voluntarily for several years, as we believe responsible homebuilding and nature recovery go hand in hand. It’s fantastic to see our teams’ work recognised and to see these biodiverse, high-quality landscapes coming to life, benefiting both communities and wildlife.”
Looking ahead, Berkeley is developing an overall approach to Environmental Net Gain and assessing the impacts of nature within its supply chain.
