Regent’s View, an innovative gasworks regeneration project in the heart of Bethnal Green, has won one of the world’s most prestigious design award at the World Architectural Festival in Singapore.
The project, delivered by St William (a Berkeley Group company) and designed by architecture practice RSHP, claimed the Future Project accolade in the Residential category.
Established in 2008, the World Architecture Festival celebrates the most innovative and inspiring current and future projects from around the globe.
The design of Regent’s View celebrates the industrial character of this 4.5-acre east London site and will see two distinctive Victorian gasholders carefully restored to become the centrepieces of a new mixed-use neighbourhood.
The development, which is now under construction, includes five colourful and finely detailed cylindrical buildings, two of which will sit within the restored gasholder frames. Together, they will provide 555 private and affordable homes and over 45,000 square feet of ground floor commercial and community space.
The project will open-up a stretch of Regent’s Canal that has been inaccessible for over 150 years and create 1.75 acres of new public space, including a children’s play area and natural habitats for both people and wildlife to enjoy.
Carefully considered pedestrian and cyclist routes will ensure the site is welcoming, accessible, and well connected to the surrounding neighbourhood.
Dean Summers, Divisional Managing Director at St William:
“Regent’s View brings together inspired design, thoughtful architecture and a deep appreciation for two incredible Victorian gasholders. The exceptional design will transform this derelict brownfield site into a welcoming and truly unique part of London, delivering hundreds of private and affordable homes where they are needed most.
“Finding innovative solutions for the most complex urban sites is what St William and Berkeley Group are all about and we're delighted that Regent’s View has been named the world’s Best Future Residential Project at the World Architecture Festival. A huge thank you to RSHP and our fantastic partners at Historic England and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.”
Graham Stirk, Senior Director, RSHP:
“I’m delighted our design for Regent’s View has been recognised by WAF. Our proposal celebrates the historical industrial heritage of the site. The importance of preserving the historic gasholder frames is that they justify a particular form of urbanism that is not the norm. This approach is reinforced by using an industrial architectural vocabulary that will define a unique urban and architectural place to live and enjoy.”
Tracy Meller, Senior Director, RSHP:
"We are delighted to win the WAF Future Project Residential Award for this exciting scheme, which will regenerate a previously inaccessible corner of Bethnal Green and breathe new life into a section of the Regents Canal walkway that has been closed for over 100 years. Delivering over 550 new homes on a brownfield site, this project raises the bar for gasholder re-development, demonstrating what can be achieved with good design and a client’s commitment to delivering quality."
