Karl Whiteman, Chairman of Berkeley Capital, has become a Trustee of local event space Woolwich Works.
Karl has overseen the creation of Royal Arsenal Riverside, the neighbourhood that Woolwich Works calls home, for more than 20 years. Having worked alongside Royal Borough of Greenwich to transform the former munitions site into a thriving destination, Karl brings a passion for placemaking and community building to the Trust.
Woolwich Works, a multi-disciplinary creative events space, is housed within one of the 23 Grade II Listed buildings that Berkeley has carefully restored at Royal Arsenal Riverside.
He has been appointed alongside Senior Vice President of The O2 Steve Sayer, with other Trustrees including leading figures in London’s arts and culture scene, business leaders, and Royal Borough of Greenwich councillors.
The two business leaders are now a part of Woolwich Creative District Trust, the independent registered charity established to run Woolwich Works. The Trust has a commitment to community access, engagement and participation by ensuring that the Woolwich Works facilities support the wider community in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

Director of Woolwich Works Nick Williams said “These two new appointments are incredibly exciting for everyone here at Woolwich Works. Steve brings experience from an iconic entertainment brand, while Karl has the local expertise and business acumen that will really help us to make an impact. We’re greatly looking forward to their contributions, supporting Woolwich Works’ rise as a major London destination, and an important part of the local fabric.”
Karl Whiteman said “I’m delighted to be joining Woolwich Works’ Board of Trustees. Berkeley has been supporting this fantastic venue since it first opened its doors, and it has been wonderful to see so many local people benefit from its community programmes over the last three years. I’m keen that we reach as many Woolwich residents as possible, and that this beautiful building continues to be treasured by the community.”
Royal Arsenal Riverside boasts a vibrant creative district, with internationally acclaimed immersive theatre production company Punchdrunk, and Acosta Dance, also on site.
Woolwich Works was recently named ‘best new culture spot’ by Time Out and runs a full calendar of multi-disciplinary events throughout the year, including many community programmes sponsored by Berkeley. For more information on events around Royal Arsenal Riverside click here.
