The Green Quarter is proud to have taken part in the nationwide initiative created to mark the Platinum Jubilee, by planting a tree in Central Gardens, as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy.
The initiative, which ran from October and ended last month, was introduced to create a legacy in Her Majesty’s name whilst also encouraging sustainable development. It has seen over one million trees planted across the United Kingdom by individuals, schools, community groups and businesses. Not only does the initiative serve as a lasting tribute to Her Majesty’s extraordinary service, it’s also about educating our community about the vital role of tree planting in combatting climate change, protecting wildlife and improving our health.
To mark the occasion, The Green Quarter held a tree planting ceremony with staff and children from the local school, Blair Peach Primary School. The children enjoyed exploring the development, learning about the different sustainability features including the numbers and types of trees that are already planted, and our plans for the future. They even had the opportunity to get stuck in and help with the planting of the tree by distributing the soil. The event was capped off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and unveiling of the plaque to mark the completion of the tree planting. The students took away their own herb growing pot to encourage further learning and hands-on experience with nature.
At The Green Quarter, we have plans for lots more tree planting. In total, 2,500 trees will be planted across the development adding to the beautiful landscapes already created along Central Gardens and around the development. Coming soon, we’re excited to announce the opening of our very own tree nursery which will be home to 600 new trees, which will be maintained on site until they are ready to be planted in the future phases of the development. Children and their families will be able to explore the tree nursery, following nature trails and learning about the different tree species and their crucial role in the environment and the community.
Jags Sanghera, Head of Community Engagement at The Green Quarter said ‘The Queen’s Green Canopy is a great opportunity for us to show our respects to Her Majesty whilst also demonstrating our responsibilities and contributions to tackle climate change, save wildlife and improve our health, creating places where residents and the local community can be happy and healthy.’
At The Green Quarter, we're proud to be part of this nationwide initiative, and we're committed to creating a greener, more sustainable future for our community.
