Prime Minister Theresa May joined local residents and community leaders at Berkeley Homes' Taplow Riverside development to unveil an iconic footbridge linking two neighbouring communities.
Mrs May, who is MP for Maidenhead, was met by MP for Beaconsfield Dominic Grieve, Leader of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Cllr Simon Dudley, Mayor of Windsor & Maidenhead Cllr Paul Lion and Chairman of Berkeley Group Tony Pidgley CBE.
Designed by bridge specialists Knights Architecture and structural engineers COWI, the footbridge will allow residents and visitors to enjoy countryside circular walks between Taplow and Maidenhead.
The shallow arch design is inspired by Brunel's nearby Maidenhead Bridge. This famous brick railway bridge boasts the widest and flattest arches in the world, and this form is echoed in the slender new steel arch structure.
Berkeley Homes is now inviting members of the local community to take part in a naming competition. An independent panel will then create a shortlist, which will be open to a final public vote before the winner is announced in Spring 2019.
Berkeley Homes' Divisional Chairman, Andrew Saunders-Davis said:
"The opening of the new footbridge at Taplow Riverside is symbolic of how Taplow Riverside is an asset to the wider community. We hope that local people will be able to make excellent use of the scenic setting and enjoy the area even more now that the bridge has been unveiled."
Surrounded by large areas of open space with beautiful meadows, Taplow Riverside includes 19 hectares of parkland, riverside walks, family picnic areas, as well as the new Roux at Skindles restaurant. This is set on the site of the old Skindles Hotel and will be run by the world-renowned chefs Michel and Alain Roux.
There are a range of homes currently for sale at Taplow Riverside, including cleverly refurbished riverside homes, elegant Edwardian-style family homes in Jubilee Meadows and Jubilee Mill Apartments, with beautiful, open-plan, wharf-style homes.
