4 Fun Days Out in Buckinghamshire
To the north of London, nestled between Oxfordshire and Bedfordshire, lies Buckinghamshire. Known affectionately as 'Bucks' to those who live there, Buckinghamshire offers up a snapshot of the Great British countryside at its best, with its flower-filled meadows, postcard villages, and remarkable stately homes.
One of the big advantages of living in Buckinghamshire is the fantastic variety of outdoor activities on offer. We've compiled some of our favourite days out in Buckinghamshire to give you a little bit of inspiration for your next trip.
1. Bekonscot Model Village and Railway
Just a half hour's drive from High Wycombe, the remarkable and endlessly charming outdoor Bekonscot Model Village and Railway has been enchanting children and adults alike for 90 years.
This model village is the first and oldest in the world, opening its miniature gates and streets to the public in 1929. Seven tiny towns with 200 little buildings take visitors on a nostalgic trip back to the England of the 1930s, and a Gauge 1 model railway runs through 10 scale miles of the village to the delight of onlookers. Bekonscot is all outside and makes for a wonderful day out with the family.
2. The Ridgeway
For nature lovers and walking enthusiasts, Buckinghamshire is a treasure trove of walks and hiking trails. None are quite so historic as the 87-mile Ridgeway walk, which has been described as Britain's oldest road.
Tracking a route set out by Iron Age settlers and Roman soldiers, the Ridgeway has been used as a trading road for over 5,000 years.
Today, taking this walk is a fantastic way to experience the gentle natural beauty of Buckinghamshire, a tapestry of dancing poppy fields, fairy tale forests and the sweeping Chiltern Hills.
3. Hogshaw Farm & Wildlife Park
Deep in the heart of the Buckinghamshire countryside, the Hogshaw Farm & Wildlife Park is not only a haven for rare members of the animal kingdom, but it's also an excellent place for a day in the great outdoors.
With acres of space for children to enjoy and paddocks populated by creatures great and small, Hogshaw Farm educates and entertains in equal measure. Of particular interest for animal lovers is the animal barn and pets corner, where visitors can get closer than ever to the farm's furry residents.
4. Stowe House and Gardens
Buckinghamshire is dotted throughout by all manner of grandiose mansions, built by nobles and aristocrats across the centuries. None are quite so impressive or accessible, however, as the marvellous Stowe House.
Featuring gardens designed by the iconic and pioneering landscaper Capability Brown, Stowe House is a splendid example of a British stately home. And with its collection of art and its wide-open spaces, both kids and grown-ups will find something to enjoy here. Be sure to venture out on one of the three paths that wind through the parkland, titled Vice, Virtue, and Liberty.
