Embracing the Pedal-Powered Lifestyle at Grand Union

Imagine stepping out of your front door onto a path that leads to adventure.

At Grand Union this is a reality, with a cycle route running alongside the Grand Union Canal from Alperton, near Wembley, and all the way through to Paddington. The path is ideal for families and friends looking for a day out with several fun destinations on the way.

The canal itself is the longest in the UK and, for those looking for a more ambitious cycle, stretches for 286 miles from London to the Midlands. The canal passes through varied scenery along the way, from rolling countryside to industrial towns and cities, making for a scenic and exciting day-out.

However, the stretch from Grand Union to Paddington is one of its most spectacular. Packed with places to enjoy, it is a popular canalside walk past colourful houseboats with swans, geese, ducks, moorhens and coots for company.

Watch the City Wake Up

Kick-start the morning with some fresh air and a short cycle to one of the canal’s many cafes and brunch spots. Beit El Zaytoun is London’s most inspired Lebanese restaurant and serves a traditional breakfast with coffee.

Further down the river, the floating Waterside Café is located in Little Venice, one of London’s most tranquil and unspoiled waterside locations, perfect for a coffee and light bite while you watch the city wake up for the weekend.

Afternoon Fun

Alternatively, for an afternoon cycle, take a pit stop at Victorian pub The Grand Junction Arms before a picnic at Wormwood Scrubs Park or an evening of entertainment on the UK’s only floating puppet theatre – The Puppet Barge.

The London Shell Co. is also moored in Paddington next to The Puppet Barge and is a great option for those looking for a pre-theatre meal. Born out of a love of high-quality seafood, the family run restaurant is held in high regard by many of the UK’s top food critics.

Moments further down the cycle path, The Floating Pocket Park at Merchant Square, Paddington is London’s only floating park and an oasis of calm in the bustling part of London. It’s a lovely spot to relax with a sandwich or a coffee on a sunny day.

Off the Cycle Path and Onto the Water

For a more adventurous day out, the canalside cycle path goes all the way to GoBoat where you can pick up your own fully electric rental picnic boat. With prices starting at £85 per hour, captain and crew (fury friends are welcome too) are able to hire the boat for up to three hours to explore the city from a new perspective.

It’s the perfect activity for friends and family as you cruise along the water while taking in some of the city’s most impressive sights, and you can bring your own tasty picnic onboard.

In addition to a fun day out, living on the Grand Union cycle path comes with many benefits. From staying fit and healthy to zipping around the city hassle-free, there’s nothing better than jumping on a bike and making the most of the day. The journey from Grand Union to Paddington by bike takes less than 30 minutes, leaving plenty of time to enjoy your destination or double back and take the same route home.
