St George and the Wembley Central & Alperton Residents' Association (WCARA) are delighted to announce the winners of this year's #Blossom 2021 competition - a local community gardening initiative to help Alperton and Wembley Central residents reconnect post-lockdown and put their green-fingered skills to the test.
The winning entries were announced by celebrity mastermind and local Brent resident, Shaun Wallace from ITV's popular quiz show, The Chase, who surprised the residents on the day.
On Saturday 7th August Mai Yang of CrabTree Avenue, Alperton, was pronounced the winner of the 'Best Front Garden' category, while Neera Lakhmana of Bassingham Road, Wembley, took home the award for 'Best Back Garden'.
Highly commended awards were also presented to Kantilal Shah of Eagle Road, Sandhya Patel of Stapleford Road, Yogini Patel of Queen Victoria Avenue and Naresh Kumar Mulgi of Lancelot Road.
#Blossom was first launched by the Wembley Central & Alperton Residents' Association (WCARA) in the height of the pandemic in May 2020 to help people find solace in nature and plants. Now in its second year, the WCARA collaborated with local housebuilder St George, who donated plants to over 1,000 budding gardeners within the community - a 66% increase on last year's plant donations.
St George enlisted Elite Landscapes - who help maintain the public open and green space at its Grand Union development in Alperton - to help source the plant donations that were distributed to residents in May.
Stephen Kirwan, Managing Director, St George West, commented: "The last 18 months has been challenging for everyone but initiatives such as #Blossom are a great way of keeping spirits high and bringing communities together. We were honoured to have been involved in the competition and want to thank everyone involved.
"Supporting biodiversity and creating green space is an integral part of our plan for Grand Union, our new development in Alperton. We have strived to ensure that much of the space is dedicated to beautifully landscaped gardens, riverside meadows and waterside walkways. It is a space where nature can flourish and we're pleased to not only be providing additional green space for residents and the local community to enjoy but also bringing 27 new trees and over 4,200 new shrubs to the area."
Chirag Gir, Chairman of the Alperton and Wembley Residents' Association, said: "We are very proud of the community in Alperton and Wembley and were thrilled to see such an excellent turnout for #Blossom 2021. The creativity and commitment shown by residents was fantastic and made it a truly tough competition to judge.
"We would like to thank everyone for entering this year, as well as St George and Elite Landscapes for their kind donation. The plants have brightened up both our neighbourhood and our spirits."
St George is developing Grand Union at the former Northfields Industrial Estate transforming it into a vibrant new neighbourhood for North West London, delivering much needed homes and jobs in the London Borough of Brent.
The canalside mixed-use development will comprise 3,350 mixed-tenure homes, of which more than 1,000 will be affordable. These new homes will be complemented by a range of local amenities including a Twisty Tails nursery, gym, health care centre and Co-op supermarket.
Offering an exciting location to live, work and relax, residents will enjoy access to 14 acres of open spaces including central gardens and a canal-side piazza featuring a café and waterside restaurant, a residents' lounge and two-lane 10-pin bowling alley along with a new community centre for the local neighbourhood.
The new development will reconnect the local area with the Grand Union Canal and River Brent by opening up previously inaccessible parts of these waterways to local residents and improving the route to Stonebridge Park Station.
Grand Union is ideally located for those travelling into the City or West End and is well connected by the Bakerloo line and Overground at Stonebridge Park Station (Zone 3) and the Piccadilly line at Alperton Station. There is also easy access to the North Circular and a range of good schools in the local area including Alperton Community School and St Joseph's.
