Grand Union’s New Bridge Makes Travel Easier and Greener

Exciting news for Grand Union residents! As this vibrant neighbourhood continues to grow, with thousands of homes already delivered and many more on the way, a brand-new pedestrian and cycle bridge is set to make getting around easier, and a whole lot more fun.

The new bridge, which has been designed by AECOM, will be located at the south end of the Grand Union development, near to the spot where the River Brent meets the Grand Union Canal.

This new bridge will provide a more direct east-west pedestrian and cycle network in and around Alperton, connecting Grand Union to the towpath on the southwestern side of the canal, the Abbey Estate and the shops beyond, as well as the Park Royal, London’s largest business hub.

What Makes This Bridge Special?

Built for everyone

Whether you’re on a bike, pushing a pram, or using mobility support, the bridge’s ramps are designed to make crossing easy, making it accessible to all.

Good for the planet

It will reduce environmental transport impacts by encouraging more walking and cycling, which in turn will reduce air pollution. Existing invasive species like giant hogweed at the proposed bridge location will be removed and replaced with lovely, native planting to improve local biodiversity and wildlife.

Good for the mind

It also seeks to encourage boating, canoeing and other activities on the canal, and boost health and wellbeing by inspiring people to spend more time in peaceful locations away from busy areas.

Promoting active travel

The new bridge will reduce journey times between Grand Union to Paddington and beyond, and increase opportunities for active travel by opening up fresh routes for walkers and cyclists, and easier access to the waterside. Cyclists can also use the bridge without having to dismount.

When Will the Grand Union Bridge Open?

Subject to planning permission, construction on the bridge is expected to start in winter 2026 so watch this space. During the construction process, there might be brief towpath closures, but you will receive regular updates so you can plan your walks and cycles accordingly.
