Meeting the Locals of Oxted

Told through the people that live and breathe the area, we headed to the streets of Oxted to find out more about what makes the town such a unique and desirable location to live in. From The Deli Oxted's recommendation to explore the abundance of lovely country pubs, to Love Oxted's promotion of coffee shops to meet up with friends for brunch and SMS Creative's promotion of activities to engage with at Master Park, hear first-hand the plethora of much-loved local destinations from the people who make up this unique community.

The quintessential Surrey town is home to fantastic high street with a number of independent shops, sport facilities and local amenities. We had the privilege of talking to a range of business owners and entrepreneurs, from local Paul James Jewellers to Elements Lifestyle to hear why they love Oxted and what brought them to the area. It is clear that this beautiful town hosts a sociable community and vibrant lifestyle close to London, yet remains surrounded by countryside and national trust woodland. Those fortunate enough to call Oxted 'home' are able to enjoy the best of town and country living.

Andrew, owner of artisan gin bar, The Ginistry, tells us why he chose Oxted as the permanent location for his business. With its vibrant atmosphere and intimate, quirky interior, The Ginistry is a lively addition to Oxted’s high street, boasting a wide range of specialist gins from all around the world.

Tom Barrs

Tom Barrs, the owner of family run jewellery business Paul James, is a familiar face to many in Oxted. Having been a staple on Oxted's high street for over 20 years, Paul James stocks an impressive range of both popular and exclusive brands, as well as bespoke and one-off pieces.

From the fantastic sense of community embedded in the town - which has led to him taking on the family business - to its promising future, highlighted by Courtyard Garden's stylish apartments across the road, Tom shares his thoughts on why Oxted is quite so special and why he has resided in the town for 22 years. 

Next up, we speak to Khushi of the ever-popular restaurant and cocktail bar, Thai Pad. A must-visit destination on Oxted’s culinary scene, Thai Pad opened on the High Street six years ago and its delicious tapas-style dishes have been drawing in locals ever since. Here, Khushi talks us through why Oxted is the ideal location for the business and what sets the town’s desirable dining offering – where choices range from Italian to Nepalese – apart for locals.
As the latest addition to the town, Courtyard Gardens offers a unique opportunity to become part of this thriving community.


Next, we spoke to Jo, salon manager at the award-winning salon, Elements. A well-established business in Oxted, Elements has been a key part of the high street for 35 years, evolving with the times to blend traditional hair services with a growing digital presence on social media.

Jo talks us through Oxted’s plethora of amenities, restaurants and bars, offering an insight into the lifestyle Oxted provides – from its beautiful park to its commutability to London and leisure outlets where you can sign up to a range of classes.


Anne-Marie, owner of ladies' boutique clothing store, Number 44, and bespoke home store, Home Edit, is a passionate member of the Oxted community. Having built up a loyal customer base, Anne-Marie shares her thoughts on why independent businesses are flocking to Oxted, and why the high street is the perfect destination to set up shop.

Another new addition to the town is beautiful new landscape-led collection of homes, Courtyard Gardens.

Matt Hagan & Lauren Loudon

Matt and Lauren set up The Deli Oxted several years ago, having decided to make the move out of London. With its impressive selection of products, including a range of meats, salamis and cheeses, the store is now a well-established favourite on the High Street.

Matt and Lauren talk us through how the business has evolved over the last few years, and discuss what brought them to the area, why they believe Oxted is so special - plus their favourite spots to explore in the area.

Stella Scordellis

Photographer, Stella Scordellis – who runs SMS Creative - has lived and worked in Oxted for over 25 years. Witness to the town’s evolution over the years, Stella shares with us what she thinks makes Oxted such a unique place to live and work, and how it inspires her photoshoots.

As the latest addition to Oxted, Stella documented each stage of construction through her photography, as transformation took place over the former gasholder site into a collection of stunning new homes.
Tracey Shrimpton

Tracey Shrimpton is one of Oxted’s biggest fans. Her role at Love Oxted, the local Business Improvement District, sees her working towards creating a thriving, safe, clean and vibrant town and supporting the local community. Love Oxted celebrates and promotes local businesses, in addition to delivering great local events, including the town’s mini artisan market.
