Earlier this year, it was announced that The Wildlife Trust had secured £5 million in funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the Nextdoor Nature initiative.
Nextdoor Nature is a project that will kickstart a grassroots response to the climate emergency and nature loss by improving green spaces for 200 communities across the UK.
Astonishingly, only 57% of adults in Britain live within five minutes’ walk of green space, a figure that falls to just 39% for people from a Black, Asian or Minority ethnic background. Nextdoor Nature seeks to address these inequalities.
A neighbourhood curated for all to enjoy a well-rounded, holistic life is not a new concept but rather one which continues to evolve to meet the demands of modern living. Heightened by the pandemic, people feel the need to be connected to nature now more than ever. Historically, this has not always been possible, particularly in our cities and urban areas but (in line with the Nextdoor Nature initiative) the UK Government have set a new target which details that everyone should live within 15 minutes’ walk to green or blue space.
These spaces create environments that support a healthy lifestyle. Evidence shows that people who connect with nature every day are more resilient, experience reduced social isolation and loneliness, and have better all-round happiness. The mood boosting effects not only have an impact on us as individuals, but also encourages our ecosystem and builds healthy pathways for biodiversity through our communities.
Silkstream, a welcoming low carbon, nature rich neighbourhood is set to pave the way in delivering both green and blue spaces for residents with an impressive 895% biodiversity net gain score. In partnership with the London Wildlife Trust as Silkstream’s ecological advisor, St George intend to restore one of London’s lost rivers: The Silk Stream that borders the eastern perimeter of the site and turn it into a feature for residents and the wider community to enjoy.
Anchored by its abundance of green space and excellent eco credentials, the homes at Silkstream are centred around 1.4 acres of elevated landscaped gardens – of which 81% of the new homes will overlook - a 1.5 acre public park and 175 metre oxbow lake.
New homes – designed with sense of wellbeing and connection to the outdoors in mind - are now available at Silkstream.
