The Woolwich foot tunnel crosses under the River Thames to North Woolwich. The tunnel offers pedestrians an alternative way to cross the river to the Woolwich Ferry service.

Crossrail

A major new railway proposal has been submitted to parliament, which includes a Crossrail station at Royal Arsenal Riverside. The new railway link would link Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west and Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east through new tunnels under central London. Crossrail's new service will include a station at Stratford, which will open in time for the 2012 Olympics. In addition, agreement has been reached in principle for a Crossrail station at Royal Arsenal Riverside, with the platforms built underground between the Royal Carriage Factory and Plumstead Road and the ticket hall close to Verbruggen House. Using the new service, journeys from Woolwich to the Isle of Dogs will take around 8 minutes, while Heathrow will be just 50 minutes away.
