Job Purpose: The role is required to advise and assist all teams in implementing the St George PLC TQM Health and Safety procedures, assessing risks and developing solutions, monitoring and improving contractor performance on a continual basis, whilst helping to ensure compliance with the relevant statutory legislation. Regular liaison will be required with the Senior Health and Safety Managers and the wider Health and Safety field team to ensure team objectives are delivered.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Maintain effective liaison and reporting lines to the Senior Health and Safety Manager and Divisional Head of H&S on all matters relating to occupational health and safety
  • Support the construction project teams in ensuring that the projects under their control maintain the relevant health and safety documentation in accordance with TQM7 policy and procedures
  • Monitor projects compliance with the St George TQM health and safety management system and submit reports to the Senior Health and Safety Manager, to ensure that project teams meet their responsibilities for the day to day management of Health and Safety
  • Liaise effectively with contractors on the relevant projects to ensure that St George's standards and requirements are well understood and effectively implemented
  • Ensure the provision of competent advice and assistance to site management in order that they can fulfil their responsibilities under St George TQM procedures and under the prevailing Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
  • Ensure that all incidents are thoroughly investigated with a timely report submitted in accordance with TQM procedures and that all actions assigned within such reports are effectively closed out
  • Assist the Senior Health and Safety Managers and the project teams to identify and track health and safety training needs on a continual basis and deliver local 'on the job' coaching to St George staff as appropriate
  • Locally monitor health and safety performance measures at each project to inform site management decisions and local initiatives targeting the continual improvement of health and safety performance
  • Act as a local advocate and advisor regarding St George's Safety Leadership Programme, 'Proud to be Safe'
  • Set a personal example of safety leadership, positive safety attitude and proactive safety behaviour
  • Support and advise the regional offices, Customer Service, Estates, and Sales & Marketing teams in the same areas as described in 2 - 10 above
  • Maintain familiarity with current legislation, HSE guidance, codes of practice and other relevant best practice literature

Technical Competencies:

  • IOSH accredited qualification at a minimum of NEBOSH Certificate level or NVQ Level 3. Higher level is preferred
  • Membership of IOSH at a minimum of entry level, working towards Chartered status
  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively at all levels from labourers up to Board level
  • A 'can do' attitude and a sense of humour
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own workload
  • Skill and accuracy in written and oral reporting
  • Ability to explain and demonstrate that the essential functions of the role can be performed effectively
  • Demonstrable knowledge and skill in the use of information technology
  • Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge of UK health and safety legislation, particularly with regard to the construction industry
  • The ability to present clearly and confidently to senior management
  • Skill in investigative analysis
