Job Purposed: Reporting to the Head of H&S, the H&S Manager will assist in supporting and advising the Berkeley Homes Eastern Counties (BHEC) management team and its operations (construction projects, marketing suites, customer service activities and offices) within the south east of England on all aspects of H&S. The H&S Manager will work closely with the Director Responsible for H&S, Head of Construction and project teams.


Responsibilities and Accountabilities: 

  • Be familiar with current health and safety legislation, codes of practice and BHEC H&S procedures, to ensure that all projects and offices maintain compliance with both legal duties and the requirements of the Berkeley Group H&S Standards;
  • Support the Head of H&S in developing a strategic health and safety plan and take a lead role in overseeing its implementation and reviewing progress towards fulfilling the agreed objectives;
  • Assist in the collation and submission of weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual H&S reports, including reports to the board;
  • Provide advice and support and be actively involved in the planning of future works/developments to ensure BHEC fulfils its CDM obligations where acting as Client, Principal Contractor and/or Principal Designer on construction projects;
  • Assist in the due diligence process of letting works packages, including the review of contractors/ consultants competence before packages are let and, where necessary, attending post tender and pre-start meetings;
  • Visit all BHEC projects, marketing suites and customer service works on a frequent basis to support and advise the site based teams in order to ensure that the highest H&S standards are achieved and maintained. Review project H&S documentation and procedures for adequacy;
  • Ensure that a monthly meeting is undertaken on all projects to identify current and upcoming High Risk activities and ensure future works are being suitably planned;
  • Conduct formal H&S inspections at all projects in line with the business objectives;
  • Ensure each project carries out the actions recommended in H&S inspection reports
  • Ensure that incidents, personal injuries, dangerous occurrences and near misses, are recorded, reported and investigated in order for corrective and preventative action to be identified and implemented;
  • Liaise with the Berkeley Group Project H&S Assessment team in respect to their site visits and in particular ensuring the close out of any actions arising;
  • Manage contact with Enforcement Agencies (HSE, EHO, etc) where required;
  • Provide guidance and assistance to all BHEC staff to ensure they comply with the requirements of the Divisional H&S training programme in accordance with Berkeley Homes Training policy;
  • Assist with any other H&S matter as may be appropriate.

  • Good knowledge of construction related environmental issues
  • Analytical thinker and problem solver
  • Good communicator
  • Ability to prepare and deliver presentations
  • Team player, willing to learn and get involved with a wide range of tasks
  • IT literate, including knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint and Word
  • Clean and valid driving licence
