Group Sustainability Manager (Homes & Places)

Job Purposed: To support delivery of the sustainability strategy, including: undertaking research on key sustainability topics; helping to deliver work streams; and helping to monitor, report and communicate our performance. This role will focus on the sustainable homes and developments aspects of the sustainability strategy including key topics such as community and social value, net biodiversity gain, sustainable transport and low carbon homes.


Responsibilities and Accountabilities: 

Reporting into the Group Head of Sustainability, you will assist the Berkeley Group in working towards its aim of being a leading sustainable company. Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Working on specific priority areas to help ensure achievement of our targets, including undertaking research and helping to develop new procedures and documents
  • Support in the delivery of three of our key priority areas: climate change, communities and nature
  • Preparing guidance to assist the business in developing sustainable homes and places
  • Tracking performance at a Group level and compiling written progress reports
  • Helping to communicate our strategy internally
  • Assisting with the communication of our strategy externally, working with the wider Responsible Business team and External Affairs team, through corporate reporting and the website
  • Adopting a proactive approach to improving performance and promoting sustainability to all staff
  • Keeping up-to-date with the sustainability agenda, new legislation and best practice guidelines and understanding how they may affect the company
  • Regularly liaising with the Operational Sustainability team to help implement the sustainability strategy and report on our performance
  • Assisting in the collation, analysis and reporting of data to meet both legislative and corporate reporting requirements
  • Working as part of the Group's Sustainability Committee to drive good practice and implement commitments
  • Supporting the team with research and administrative tasks, as and when required
  • Help to organise events, meetings and workshops

Person Specification:

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to build professional relationships
  • Ability to research complex topics and communicate findings in an easy to understand format
  • The ability to motivate people to change their behaviour
  • The ability to work independently and manage their own workload
  • Good knowledge of sustainability issues, preferably within the construction/house building industry within the design and masterplanning, but also out of sector
  • A broad view of sustainability, focusing not only on environmental issues, but also the relative importance of social and economic impacts of our activities

Please note our standard working hours are 8am until 5:30pm Monday to Friday.
