Group Sustainability Manager (Construction)

Job Purposed: To support delivery of our sustainability strategy, including: undertaking research on key sustainability topics; helping to deliver work streams; and helping to monitor, report and communicate our performance. This role will focus on sustainability within our day-to-day operations, and particularly on our construction sites aspects such as environmental management, site sustainability assessments, waste and resources and climate change.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities: 

Reporting into the Group Head of Sustainability, you will assist the Berkeley Group in working towards its aim of being a leading sustainable company. Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Provide operational support to the wider sustainability team within the divisions to ensure legal compliance and consistency for site environmental management
  • Oversee the Sustainability Management System, supporting the working group to ensure it is accurate and regularly updated
  • Help to implement and co-ordinate a standard approach to Sustainability Assessments across the Group
  • Enhance procedures for incident reporting and management across the Group
  • Work with the operational team to help support them in their roles to drive positive change, encourage innovation, help manage risk and influence business evolution
  • Communicate our strategy and performance internally via the Group Sustainability committee, staff communication and through other mechanism in order to drive positive change
  • Develop Group-level requirements, including policies, standards, guidance and training in relation to operational sustainability requirements 
  • Manage the Group in the area of sustainable business to ensure that we are reducing our impact on climate change and a leader within the industry
  • Monitor, track and review data on the sustainable business performance at a Group level to ensure that we are meeting our sustainability targets
  • Co-ordinate working groups and meetings with experts from the business on key sustainable business topics 
  • Help drive and implement key sustainability topic areas of the business framework, Our Vision, including waste and resources

Person Specification:

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to build professional relationships
  • Ability to research complex topics and communicate findings in an easy to understand format
  • The ability to motivate people to change their behaviour
  • The ability to work independently and manage their own workload
  • Good knowledge of sustainability issues, preferably within the construction/house building industry within the design and masterplanning, but also out of sector
  • A broad view of sustainability, focusing not only on environmental issues, but also the relative importance of social and economic impacts of our activities

Please note our standard working hours are 8am until 5:30pm Monday to Friday.
