Job Purpose: To develop, plan and deliver key programmes of work for the Berkeley Foundation including the Community Investment Fund, the Capacity Building Fund, and our Covid-19 response grants, and to contribute to the delivery and future development of the Berkeley Foundation's strategy.

Community Investment Fund

The Community Investment Fund allows us to make small-to-medium sized grants to address specific social issues within our four thematic focus areas. We have delivered four Community Investment Fund programmes to date, working with a total of 23 charities. These are Improving Youth Mental Health,_ Combatting Youth Homelessness_, Empowering Young Women into Work, and Skills for Positive Futures.

Capacity Building Fund

The Capacity Building Fund is an additional pot of funding available to all the Foundation's current charity partners. It aims to help our charity partners to become stronger, more resilient, and better able to overcome challenges and operate effectively.

Covid-19 response grants

Since March 2020, we have made c. £300,000 in grants to help our charity partners to respond to the Covid-19 crisis. These have included support with emergency supplies for families living in poverty, support to launch new digital services for young people, and support to bring key staff members back from furlough. We anticipate that our Covid-19 response grants will continue for at least the next six months.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Manage the Foundation's key funding programmes, including new and existing Community Investment Fund programmes, the Capacity Building Fund, and Covid-19 response grants, to best practice standards
  • Carry out and commission research into specific social issues to develop expertise and ensure that the Foundation's programmes are well informed, relevant, and timely
  • Promote and communicate funding opportunities to potential stakeholders, internally and externally, in order to ensure sufficient relevant, high-quality applications
  • Develop and maintain constructive relationships with applicants, supporting them to develop their funding requests where necessary
  • Assess applications and make recommendations about which should be considered for funding
  • Ensure sufficient and appropriate information is available for each full application to enable informed decision making
  • Implement funding decisions, including communicating with partners, initiating grant payments, visiting projects, building strong partnerships and ensuring appropriate and proportional monitoring and evaluation is in place
  • Maintain clear and accessible records of all work undertaken to agreed standards using the Foundation's database and filing systems
  • Develop opportunities to share the outcomes of grant making programmes with colleagues, stakeholders and the wider sector in line with the Foundation's commitment to continual learning and development
  • Deliver a series of learning events for the Foundation's charity partners
  • Produce regular Finance, Audit and Risk Committee and Trustees reports on all core areas of responsibility
  • Contribute to the development of the Foundation's grant making strategy
  • Provide effective line management for the Programme Officer
  • Assist with other Foundation projects, events and partnerships as required
  • Represent the Berkeley Foundation in a way that is consistent with its values

Technical Competencies 

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Experience of working within or with the voluntary, charity or community sector
  • Experience of project and/or programme management
  • Experience of building strong, supportive partnerships with voluntary/community organisations
  • Track record of delivering and reporting against targets
  • Knowledge and experience of the grant making process
  • Knowledge and experience of impact measurement and evaluation in charitable sector
  • Understanding of the legal/financial/governance issues pertaining to voluntary, charity and community organisations
