New nationwide survey reveals 'green spaces and good architecture' are in UK top five 'must haves'

9th November 2011

Local agents report migration influx from West London to Surrey for green space

Eight months work by civil servants and statisticians has revealed the initial findings to David Cameron's nationwide £2million a year happiness survey - a 'top five' of subjects that matter most to people, health, family and relationships, work, the environment and education.

Most people were far more interested in having a "decent neighbourhood park and litter free streets, than in climate change" the survey revealed.

ONS chief Jill Matheson explained: "We expected people to talk about the environment, but the majority of comments about this were focused on 'the importance of access to good-quality local green spaces'.  There was also concern for 'not living in ugly surroundings' and 'good architecture'.

Paul Bennett, Sales & Marketing Director, St James concurs: "It's encouraging to know the nationwide happiness survey findings have revealed that 'living in a stylish home in a good location with green spaces' is in the UK top five 'must haves'. Our own customer feedback echoes the results of the new government survey, i.e. the importance of parkland and open space.

"We purposely choose locations for our developments with easy access to green/open spaces. St James Park Mews in Surbiton is located opposite the popular Long Ditton recreational ground including tennis courts and a children's play park. Our development in the heart of Kingston, The Boatyard is right on the riverside, with direct access to riverside walks along the towpath to Richmond" Bennett concluded.

Local estate agent, Andrew Pollard at Stack and Bonner explains: "Green spaces and access to local parks are definitely an important factor in the decision process when buying a house. We have recently seen a significant increase in the number of purchasers looking to migrate from London out to Surrey. The key driving factor is a bid to find a more peaceful and idyllic life after living in the city - with greater access to outside space and parkland."
