The St William Brand (Now Part of the Berkeley Brand)

A Brand With a Reputation For Landscape-Led Development

St William was established in 2014 as a joint venture between Berkeley Group and National Grid to transform redundant gasworks into new homes and thriving neighbourhoods. It was created to unlock some of the most technically complex regeneration sites across London and the South of England, many of them former industrial sites requiring extensive remediation.

The brand’s purpose was clear: to bring long closed land back into the heart of communities, creating high-quality, mixed-use, residential led places for everyone.

What St William Was Known For

A defining aspect of the St William brand was its landscape led philosophy:

  • Designing the landscape and public realm first, then shaping buildings around it
  • Reconnecting former industrial land with surrounding neighbourhoods
  • Prioritising community, high-quality open spaces, sustainability, and placemaking
  • Capturing each development’s unique identity through a poem written to reflect the spirit of the place

This approach enabled the creation of sociable, ecologically sensitive, and welcoming new neighbourhoods: an increasingly important ambition in dense urban environments.

St William developments became known for outstanding landscape quality. The concept of ‘landscape’: “to shape a place where people belong,” guided every scheme. By starting with the landscape, St William could open up land closed to the public for decades while delivering a strong sense of place.

Landscape led development also responded directly to the challenges faced by modern cities like London: greater density, congestion, and growing pressure on public realm. By considering the experience of people first, St William created places that were beautiful, sociable, functional and sustainable.

The St William Legacy

St William played a significant role in shaping modern landscape led development across London and the South of England.

Collectively, these achievements strengthened St William’s position as a trusted regeneration specialist, recognised for turning technically challenging brownfield land into thriving places with long-term social value. The brand’s legacy continues to influence Berkeley’s approach to placemaking and landscape led design.

Key Developments Included:

  • Prince of Wales Drive, Battersea – the brand’s first flagship project (955 homes)
  • King’s Road Park, Fulham – a transformative regeneration project in progress (1,800 homes)
  • Regent’s View, Elmswater, and Courtyard Gardens – further developments that demonstrate the St William approach

Track Record and Impact

  • A development pipeline capable of delivering more than 20,000 new homes on former gasworks and brownfield land
  • Over 33 regeneration sites, forming one of the largest collections of complex transformation projects in Greater London
  • A consistent commitment to opening previously inaccessible land, transforming industrial heritage into high-quality public realm
