Local area

Wantage is a small market town just a few miles south west of Oxford and is distinguished by being the birthplace of King Alfred the Great in AD849, and much later the chosen home of poet, John Betjeman.

Wantage is surrounded by beautiful Oxfordshire countryside, situated at the foot of the Berkshire Downs in the heart of the Vale of White Horse. The horse, cut into the hillside at Uffington, has mysterious origins going back at least 3000 years, but lends a unique character to the Vale.

Modern connections coexist alongside these ancient features. Wantage is connected to the M4 via the A338, and Reading by the A417. The nearest station is Didcot Parkway, where direct journey times to London Paddington are around forty-five minutes.
