Local Transport
Almost as famous as punting down the River Cam is Cambridge's choice of transport. The humble bicycle has long been a favourite mode of transport in Cambridge, but today, they have an added significance as part of Cambridge's commitment to the environment
In a city where 1 in 4 residents cycle to work it is important for there to be extensive cycle networks that are available for all ages to enjoy. In 2008 Cambridge city was awarded National Cycling Town status. This new status means that up until March 2011 £7.2 million is being spent on improving existing cycle facilities, providing additional cycle parking and bikeability cycle training and lastly providing cycle events and promotions.
In a city which is relatively flat it is easy to see why a more traditional mode of transport is used, in which you can relax and take in the beautiful scenery on a commute to work or short journey into town.
In a town where cycling is important Cambridge Riverside has been designed with these principles in mind. There will be ample underground parking, but secure bike racks and direct access to the Common which will ensure driving is unnecessary.
Cambridge's commitment to the environment has also impacted the way in which Cambridge Riverside will be built with construction also reflecting environmental considerations. For example, the provision of a combined Heat and Power Plant ensuring the ongoing impact and carbon footprint will be reduced, while solar panels to the apartment roofs contribute to hot water provision.
